Police tape and evidence markers mark a Chicago street after a weekend shooting

Father’s Day weekend shootings in Chicago double year over year with 42 victims as Friday’s toll hits the highest level since July 2024

CHICAGO, IL — Father’s Day weekend brought 42 people shot or killed across Chicago, a 100% jump from the same holiday weekend last year, according to preliminary reports. Rain later in the weekend may have limited the final toll, with no shootings reported after 6:15 a.m. Sunday.

The city also logged 26 shooting victims on Friday alone, the highest one-day count since July 5, 2024, according to HeyJackass.com, which tracks Chicago crime statistics. The weekend total remained below some longer-term averages, but the year-over-year increase underscored the pressure on city leaders as they promote a drop in violent crime.

Roseland attack accounts for nearly one-third of victims

The deadliest single incident happened late Friday in Roseland, where police said at least two gunmen fired more than 100 rounds into a crowd gathered in a parking lot. Twelve people were shot, making the attack responsible for nearly a third of the weekend’s victims.

Police said the shooting unfolded shortly after 11 p.m. in the 200 block of West 95th Street. Officers found a 32-year-old woman with two gunshot wounds to the back and a 44-year-old man with four graze wounds to the back; both were taken to hospitals in good condition.

As more victims arrived at hospitals around the city and suburbs, investigators reported a 13th person declined treatment. Witnesses said a red SUV pulled alongside the crowd before two gunmen opened fire from both sides of the vehicle.

Friday and Saturday shootings produced multiple killings

The Roseland violence was followed by several fatal shootings across the city. Among them were a 29-year-old man shot multiple times near South Michigan Avenue, a 33-year-old man found with multiple gunshot wounds on West 30th Street, and a 34-year-old man found on North Latrobe with a gunshot wound to the chest.

Police also said a 50-year-old man was found shot in the chest on West 75th Street and later died, while an 18-year-old man shot on West Quincy died after being taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital. In that case, officers took a 17-year-old boy into custody and recovered a weapon; charges were pending and police said the incident appeared domestic-related.

Sunday morning closed the weekend with more shootings and a train rider hurt

Shootings continued into Sunday morning, including a man who walked into the University of Chicago Hospital with a torso wound and later was listed in critical condition, a woman shot in the leg during a gathering on South Kilbourne, and a 17-year-old boy shot in the chest on South Rockwell while inside a vehicle.

One of the final incidents came at 11:30 p.m. Sunday in the 1400 block of South Christiana, where three people were shot during a large gathering. Police said the crowd made it difficult to find the offenders.

Earlier Sunday, gunfire from three vehicles on the Dan Ryan Expressway struck a nearby train, breaking glass that hit a 46-year-old man in the face and body. He was treated in good condition.

Father’s Day weekend remains a recurring violent stretch

Chicago police and crime reporters have long viewed Father’s Day weekend as one of the city’s most violent periods of the year, and this year followed that pattern. The preliminary count was still below some historic holiday-weekend totals, but it marked the bloodiest day the city has seen since 2024 and added another difficult benchmark for Mayor Brandon Johnson.

HeyJackass.com counts shootings on expressways within city limits, while CPD does not include those incidents because the Illinois State Police handles them. Both the city and the tracking site also note that totals can shift slightly as investigators review cases and victims’ conditions change.
